Miami Marlins coach Skip Schumacher, who won the “Coach of the Year Award” last year, is leaving the team due to poor performance.
Major League Baseball’s Miami announced on the 30th (Korean time) that Schumacher will leave the team after this season. “After several conversations, Schumacher and the club decided to separate under mutual agreement,” Miami said. “We thank Schumacher for his contribution to the team.”
Schumacher debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2005 and started his career. He retired after playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds. He was also a teammate of Ryu Hyun-jin when he was with the Dodgers.
Schumacher, who did not receive much attention as a player, began his coaching career with the San Diego Padres in 2021. Schumacher, who has been recognized for his leadership, took the helm of Miami since October 2022 and led the team to the postseason last year, receiving the National League Coach of the Year award even though he was a rookie coach.
However, the team crashed after just one season. This season, the Miami Marlins recorded a poor record of 62 wins and 100 losses with a 0.382 percentage, and Schumacher had to take the blame. “It is an honor to be a coach of the Miami Marlins,” Schumacher said. “I am proud of everything we have accomplished together.”
“I would like to thank my fans for their support during my time in Miami and I will always cherish last year’s playoff season,” he added.
Coach Schumacher also drew attention for choosing a head-to-head match against Shohei Ohtani in the game against the Dodgers on the 20th. He chose to go head-to-head with Ohtani on third base with two outs in the seventh inning when his team was trailing 3-9 and fell victim to the milestone of 50 homers and 50 steals.
After the game, coach Schumacher said, “If it was a one-point difference, I would have sent out (the four intentional pitches),” adding, “It is inappropriate for baseball’s god to avoid the game when we are losing by a large margin.”
