The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario proposes ban on celebrity gambling advertising

Ontario’s Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) announced plans to modify authorized pools that could be used in future gambling ads.

This change will be made with the intention of reducing the potential damage to young people and children.

If an entertainer or influencer is deemed to appeal to a minor audience, it is prohibited to appear in advertising or marketing for gambling products.

Both active and retired players will be banned from being used in any material, as well as cartoon characters and symbols.

In a statement, AGCO said: “Concerns remain high about the potential adverse effects on minors, the most vulnerable population.

“So AGCO is proposing to ban the use of athletes as well as celebrities who can reasonably expect to appeal to children and adolescents through Internet gambling advertising and marketing in Ontario.”

The announcement comes just weeks after the release of financial results for the first and first year of the regulated iGaming market in Ontario.

AGCO said it would discuss the matter with stakeholders by May 8 before enacting the changes.

If the amendment is passed, operators will have a three-month grace period to comply with the new standards.

Paul Burns, president and CEO of the Canadian Game Association, said, “It is virtually impossible for minors to gamble online.

“You can’t open an account unless you show me your verified ID.”
