Is there an idol fandom in Chinese women’s basketball, too? “17,000 followers.” Yang Shuyu

Domestic professional sports are undergoing revival due to the formation of an idol fandom culture.

In the case of the men’s professional basketball (KBL), brothers Heo Woong (KCC) and Heo Hoon (KT), Byun Joon-hyung and Yang Hong-seok (military athletic unit) are loved by many fans.

The same was true of China. Basketball is traditionally the most popular sport in China. As a popular sport, there were players who formed idol fandom in women’s basketball.

She is Yang Su-yu from the Guangdong New Century Basketball Club. Born in 2002, guard Yang Su-yu played for China as a member of the 3×3 team at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games and won the gold medal. She has nearly 20,000 followers on Instagram.

Kwang Dong, Yang’s team, participated in the Asia-Pacific Women’s Basketball Challenge (AWBC) held in Haikou, Hainan Province, China on Thursday and played against Seodaemun-gu Office. More than 300 fans came to the stadium, most of whom were fans of Yang.

Although she is a female player, there were many more female fans than male fans. Some fans brought pictures of Yang Su-yu’s large face and goods. When Yang Shu-yu grabbed the ball, fans sitting on both sides of the court turned on their smartphone cameras to capture the play. An AWBC official said, “Many female fans are fascinated by Yang’s beautiful appearance and play.”
